AkwaCross Language Class

The Akwa Ibom and Cross River States Community Association, Toronto (Akwacross) organized an online Language Class aimed at teaching the basics of Efik and Ibibio. The program was delivered via Zoom to accommodate participants across various locations.

Start Date: July 6, 2024

End Date: October 26, 2024

Frequency: Every Saturday

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (1 hour each session)

Purpose
The primary goal was to make learners conversational in Efik and Ibibio by focusing on everyday vocabulary and simple sentence structures. The class broke down basic words and expressions for easy understanding, enabling participants to use the languages in daily interactions.

Participation and Registration

Registration was done via phone at (647) 624-1568 or by email at Akwacross01@gmail.com.

A one-time fee of $20 per person was charged for the entire program.

Participation was open to everyone, with no restrictions on background or previous knowledge of the languages.

Global Reach: We were delighted to host participants from across the globe, including several non-African learners who were eager to explore and appreciate Efik and Ibibio culture.

Interactive sessions where learners practiced speaking and responding in Efik and Ibibio.

A welcoming atmosphere that encouraged consistent attendance and participation, fostering a rich exchange of cultures and perspectives.

Conclusion
The Akwacross Language Class successfully ran for nearly four months, equipping attendees with foundational conversational skills in Efik and Ibibio. By the end of the program, learners were more confident using everyday vocabulary, supporting the association’s mission to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Akwa Ibom and Cross River communities while building connections with a truly global audience.
